Our Work

United Way advances the common good by focusing on education, income and health - the building blocks to a good life. A quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family and good life - these are our goals for the residents of Muskegon, Oceana and Newaygo counties.

Our goal is to create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place. We invite you to part part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. That's what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Each year, community volunteers give of their time to review and assess community programs and agencies which contribute to our mutual goals. Below are listed our partners and their awards from community volunteers.

Here are the current agencies receiving United Way funding.

Since 1970, we have been serving individuals who have no where to turn. People of all ages and walks of life call us when life gets tough. We listen and respond with compassion and empathy. Our programs are excellent because we continually grow and change with the needs of our clients.
Focus Area: Emergency Services Strategy: Basic Needs Program: 211/Helpline Program: Critical Incident Stress Management
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Teams are administered and coordinated by Gryphon Place using volunteers from the community. Teams quickly respond to groups that have been impacted by a traumatic event, helping them to process their reactions and educating them on stress symptoms. We have helped people after a traumatic event in all types of settings including schools, businesses, hospitals, neighborhoods, police and fire departments. We debrief community groups as well as first responders.

Our staff and volunteers have been trained using the nationally recognized Mitchell Model. We know that when persons, using this model, are given the opportunity to voluntarily discuss reactions to a traumatic occurrence and are given information on coping with stress reaction, they more quickly return to normal functioning.
